DJI Wookong M, NAZA M V2 GPS Flight Controllers & Accessories

DJI Wookong M, NAZA M Lite or DJI NAZA V2 GPS  which is the best Multi Rotor flight controller for me?

A quick overview of the DJI Innovations Multi Rotor flight controllers:

The DJI NAZA M Lite GPS and DJI NAZA M V2 GPS are Flight Controllers which are identical in flight performance, they both have excellent flight characteristics, their flight stability and manoeuvrability is inherited directly from the DJI Wookong WKM (also called the DJI Wookong M), which has exceptional control algorithms which are also found in the other flight controllers from the DJI Innovations product range, like the WKH for traditional helicopters. The NAZA M Lite, NAZA M V2 GPS and the DJI Wookong M are intended for two different users and uses, the NAZA M Lite GPS and NAZA M V2 are Flight Controllers for the hobby flyer that is looking to do a little aerial photography, a FPV flyer or just to have “fun” flights without the need for automated flights using way points or telemetry information.

The DJI Wookong M (WKM) is a Flight Controller & Autopilot in one and was designed to be used for professional aerial photography, conducting aerial surveys and GIS mapping. The DJI Wookong M WKM comes with many additional functions over both the NAZA M Lite and NAZA M V2 GPS Flight Controllers. The DJI Wookong M WKM has the option to add the M View Data Link Radios which work with a laptop to give a GCS (Ground Control Station) which allows for complete control of the Wookong M WKM from the GCS, from auto take-off, autonomous flight and landing with assistance of live telemetry while in flight. The real time information from the M View Data Radios is displayed on a 3D map, the most important information is clearly displayed to keep the pilot fully updated on the details of the flight. While the Wookong M WKM is designed for the professional aerial photographer they can also be great to fly for fun and have no rival for stability or functions!

What is the difference between the DJI NAZA M Lite & NAZA M V2 GPS?

The main difference between the DJI NAZA M Lite GPS and the DJI NAZA M V2 GPS is the extra functions and features found when looking to use the GoPro Gimbal fro DJi or the iOSD, the Naza Lite will not support the V2 PMU required to opertrae the Can Network needed. Both the Naza M V2 GPS and the Naza M Lite GPS have position hold; this is great if you’re looking to hold a position over an area of interest if FPV flying or using a camera like a GoPro to take some pictures. The I.O.C (Intelligent Orientation Control) feature is often called “carefree” mode on many other flight controllers; there are two options in this mode, either “Home Lock” or “Course Lock”. It allows the pilot to fly a QuadCopter, HexaCopter or Octocopter (OctoCopters are not supported by the Naza Lite) without the concern of knowing its orientation. It’s a great feature to have as you will not lose your orientation when it starts to get a little smaller at the far end of the flying field! It also means you can spin (Yaw) the craft 360 degrees around and around while flying in a straight line in any direction and it will continue flying straight in that same direction. There is additional assistance in the form of the RTH (Return to Home) feature which will see the NAZA M V2 GPS or Naza M Lite GPS bring your copter back to you, this is very useful if you have pushed the QuadCopter, HexaCopter or OctoCopter out a little too far out, the RTH will also bring your copter back home should the power in the battery become too low, which is another helpful addition to make for safer flights.

DJI NAZA M V2 GPS or DJI Wookong WKM? Why would I need the DJI Wookong WKM over the NAZA M V2 GPS?

The DJI NAZA M V2 and DJI NAZA M V2 GPS are both class leading in the hobby world, and at this time there is no other flight controller that offers the same level of flight performance, ease of setup and the features for the same price point. However the DJI Wookong M WKM is a professional tool to get a task done and is built to do a job, it’s able to hold its position with more accuracy and carry out autonomous flights with telemetry information sent to a laptop computer in the field, and where the law will allow for flights beyond visual line of sight, the Wookong M makes these flights possible. The Wookong M also has support for larger diameter QuadCopter, HexaCopter, X8 and Octocopter’s over 650mm in diameter, the DJI NAZA M Lite or the NAZA M V2 GPS do no support these larger frames which are over 650 mm across, which for many aerial photographers lifting up bigger pay loads like DSLR cameras with an OctoCopter or a X8 it’s a necessity to use the Wookong M, with these limits in mind, which are beyond both the NAZA M Lite and NAZA M V2 GPS it would be time to progress to the Wookong M. They are both fantastic, however the DJI Wookong M does it all, and that much better, in other words would you use a hammer to tighten a screw? It all comes down to selecting the correct tool for the job.

Summary:

Whichever Flight Controller you choose from the DJI Innovations range you will not be disappointed! The best controller for you is the one which matches your needs the best, DJI NAZA M Lite GPS for fun, DJI NAZA M V2 GPS for fun and some additional features for Zenmuse support with the added features that the GPS brings with RTH. The DJI Wookong M is for you if you want full waypoint flights and are looking at Quadcopters, HexaCopter or OctoCopters over 650 mm in diameter or HexaCopters, OctoCopter or X8 with large payloads and have a need for tighter control over your flights.
